What is a Headache?

A headache is a pain in your head or face that’s often described as a pressure that’s throbbing, constant, sharp or dull. Headaches can differ greatly in regard to pain type, severity, location and frequency.

Headaches are a very common condition that most people will experience many times during their lives. They’re the most common form of pain and are a major reason cited for days missed at work or school, as well as visits to healthcare providers. While most headaches aren’t dangerous, certain types can be a sign of a more serious condition.

What are the Types of Headaches?

A primary headache is caused by overactivity of or problems with pain-sensitive structures in your head. A primary headache isn't a symptom of an underlying disease.

Chemical activity in your brain, the nerves or blood vessels surrounding your skull, or the muscles of your head and neck (or some combination of these factors) can play a role in primary headaches. Some people may also carry genes that make them more likely to develop such headaches.

The most common primary headaches are:

  1. Cluster headache
  2. Migraine
  3. Cervicogenic
  4. Tension headache

What Are The Causes of Headaches?

  • Illness. This can include infections, colds, and fevers. Headaches are also common with conditions like sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses), a throat infection, or an ear infection. In some cases, headaches can result from a blow to the head or, rarely, a sign of a more serious medical problem.

  • Stress. Emotional stress and depression as well as alcohol use, skipping meals, changes in sleep patterns, and taking too much medication. Other causes include neck or back strain due to poor posture.

  • Your environment, including secondhand tobacco smoke, strong smells from household chemicals or perfumes, allergens, and certain foods. Stress, pollution, noise, lighting, and weather changes are other possible triggers.

  • Genetics. Headaches, especially migraine headaches, tend to run in families. Most children and teens (90%) who have migraines have other family members who get them. When both parents have a history of migraines, there is a 70% chance their child will also have them. If only one parent has a history of these headaches, the risk drops to 25%-50%.

  • Poor Posture causes tension in your upper back, neck and shoulders, which can lead to a headache. Typically, the pain throbs in the base of the skull and sometimes flashes into the face, especially the forehead.

    How to fix it: Avoid sitting or standing in one position for long periods. Sit up straight and support your lower back. Consider using a special headset if you spend a lot of time on the phone, as holding a handset between your head and shoulder can strain muscles and cause headaches.

 

How Can We Help?

Chiropractors can assess, diagnose, and manage headaches. Evidence suggests that chiropractic care, including manual therapy, can be effective in treating cervicogenic and tension headaches. Studies have also shown that chiropractic care can help decrease the intensity and frequency of migraines.

I have been coming here for back and shoulder pain for the past two months, definitely seeing improvement as the shoulders do not feel as tight anymore. One day after work, I experienced pain deep within the right rhomboid area, right shoulder blades and neck pains. It felt like a stiff neck but more intense. After 2 weeks, hoping it would naturally go away, it didn’t. It was very uncomfortable and sometimes painful which resulted in me taking some pain killers. So that’s when I decided to try Chiro. I was assigned with Dr. Siew Wei at the Rivervale Mall Branch and was advised to go for a 20 session package, which I did. After about 4 sessions, is when I started to feel some improvement. Yes, it takes time and it’s not an immediate result. By the 10th Session, most of the pain was gone and by the 18th session. I’m back to normal. Dr. Siew Wei is friendly and knowledgeable, and I’m glad that she had managed to cure away the pain. Thank you.

Have been with Livewell Sengkang about 3 months now, and have nothing but good stuff to say about them. Firstly the service from the front desk is great, with very quick replies and very flexible whenever I have to make last minute changes to my time slot. Very glad with the friendliness of the staff and how convenient they make my booking of sessions! As for my doctor, Dr Kenny gave clear explanations from the very start, is extremely friendly and easy to talk to, which I appreciate. Went here to correct my neck posture as well as my hunchback, which I do see myself improving and being more conscious about as the sessions go on. Feel a lot lighter and easier to stand straight after each session. Overall a very comfortable experience, really recommend!
