What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A Chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation or spinal alignment, is a manual procedure performed by Chiropractors to correct misalignments (subluxations) in the spine or other joints of the body. It is carried out by the chiropractor applying a short, quick force to the area of interest, aiming to improve mobility, alleviate pain, and restore proper function to the nervous system.

What is a Chiropractor?

A Chiropractor is a health care professional focused on the diagnosis & treatment of neuromuscular disorders through manual adjustment or manipulation of the spine.

What Problems can Chiropractic Adjustment Help with?

Each person who seeks chiropractic adjustment has a unique reason for their appointment, but all chiropractic adjustments treat your musculoskeletal system. Some people choose to have a chiropractic adjustment if they have the following conditions:

  • Headaches
  • Joint pain and dysfunction
  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Stiff muscles or muscle aches
  • Slipped disc/disc herniation
  • Scoliosis
  • Knee pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Pregnancy related concerns (postnatal and prenatal)

Chiropractors make sure not only that your joints are moving properly, but also that your surrounding muscles are functioning as well.

Why is Chiropractic Adjustment Important?

The significance of chiropractic adjustment lies in several factors:

  1. Pain Relief and Management: Chiropractic adjustment is renowned for its effectiveness in alleviating pain, particularly in the back, neck, and joints. By realigning the spine and correcting misalignments, chiropractors can reduce pressure on nerves, providing natural and drug-free pain relief.

  2. Improved Functionality: Misalignments in the spine can interfere with nerve function, leading to decreased mobility and discomfort. Through precise adjustments, chiropractors restore proper alignment, enhancing overall bodily function and range of motion.

  3. Prevention and Maintenance: Beyond addressing existing issues, chiropractic care plays a crucial role in preventive healthcare. Regular adjustments help maintain spinal health, preventing future injuries and promoting long-term wellness.

  4. Enhanced Quality of Life: Many individuals experience a significant improvement in their quality of life after undergoing chiropractic care. Reduced pain, increased mobility, and improved overall well-being are common outcomes of regular adjustments.

  5. Holistic Approach to Health: Chiropractic adjustment is part of a holistic approach to health that considers the interconnectedness of the body's systems. By addressing spinal health, chiropractors aim to optimize overall wellness, supporting the body's natural healing abilities.

  6. Non-invasive and Safe: Unlike invasive procedures or reliance on medication, chiropractic adjustment is non-invasive and generally safe when performed by a qualified practitioner. This makes it a preferred choice for those seeking natural healthcare alternatives.

Patient case study

Prolonged desk work for extended hours start to increase disc pressure and muscle tightness. Adjustments help to reduce muscle hypertonicity, increase range of motion and reduce compounded disc pressure.

What is a Joint Dysfunction?

Our body is interconnected; it relies on our brain to send signals to them regularly to function properly—also known as the motor function. Likewise, when the skin or muscle feels something, it will send those signals to the brain to notify it. In this case, it is the sensory function.

The nervous system carries signals which originate from our brain and spinal cord. The spinal cord is a direct extension of our brain (together, they make the central nervous system) which branches out to our entire body via smaller nerves we collectively name the peripheral nervous system.

As the spinal cord runs in between our spine, any form of dysfunction in between the spinal joints would put pressure on the nerves. A pinched nerve will disturb the signalling system; which leads to pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, or other symptoms being felt not in the spine but in other parts of the body.

What Causes This Dysfunction?

In a healthy body, aligned spinal joints allow optimal body function without presenting any pain or weakness. This ideal alignment is maintained and held by our muscles & ligaments that surround the joint or spine.

They also help to reduce compressive loads onto the spinal disc. It allows our nerves to travel freely around the spine without pinching or compression. Spinal joints are independent and move freely from each other.

It enables flexibility for joints to move; it also allows the joints to move out of alignment when excessive or repetitive forces are applied. It can be caused by:

  • Traumatic excessive force (car accident, fall, etc.)
  • Muscle contractions that pull joints out of alignment (excessive unilateral exercises, muscle injury, etc.)
  • Poor posture (prolonged use of mobile phone/laptop, etc.)
  • Repetitive motions on one side (occupational hazard, etc.)
  • Genetic deformities (scoliosis)

Frequently Asked Questions About Spinal Decompression Therapy

Chiropractic adjustments are a natural method which allows the restoration of natural function enabling our body to heal naturally. There is no need for medications as well as invasive surgeries. Many studies as well as patient proofing ( link to testimonial part) indicate that it is an effective way to relieve pain/muscle spasms, increase range of motion and prevent musculoskeletal health conditions.

Chiropractors use different methods to perform chiropractic adjustments. Most common methods include manual hand spinal adjustments, activators, joint mobilisations as well as soft tissue stretching and releases. These techniques all have one goal in mind, which is to remove joint dysfunction.

During an adjustment, we often hear a pop or crack sound.  This comes from the synovial fluid which lubricates and protects the joints. Over time, gases can build up in joints and adjustments help to release these gases to ensure proper function.

In Singapore, a Chiropractic adjustment session would cost roughly between $90 - $200. At Live Well Chiropractic, a chiropractic session is $100 ala carte, and we do have care plans catered to individual needs averaging around $60 - $90 per session dependent on recommendations.
