The main function of the leg joints (knees, hips and ankles) is to bend, straighten, and bear the weight of the body. Whenever you use your legs (walk, run, swim, etc), a cushion of cartilage helps prevent friction as these joints twist and bend. The structures surrounding these joints: bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles, also provide support and work together to withstand stress.
These joints are strong, but they are not indestructible. With age and use, the cartilage can wear down or become damaged. Muscles and tendons can get overused. Bones wear away and/or break during a fall or other injury. Any of these conditions can lead to pain.
Poor mechanics of the knee is usually the most common cause of non-traumatic pain. Imbalance in other muscle groups that attach to the knee can also lead to pain and dysfunction. The main treatment for mechanical or overuse injuries to the knee is to re-establish proper balance of the muscles, restore movement to the knee cap and other joints and correct any misalignments.
