What is Vertigo: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is a symptom, rather than a condition itself. It's the sensation that you, or the environment around you, is moving or spinning. This feeling may be barely noticeable, or it may be so severe that you find it difficult to keep your balance and do everyday tasks.

Causes of Vertigo

Vertigo is often caused by an inner ear problem and the most common cause is due to a change in your head's position. This is also known as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). BPPV occurs when tiny calcium crystals, called otoconia, break away from their original position in the ear canal and start to alter our perception of time and space, hence bringing about giddiness. People with BPPV would often trigger it when lying down, sitting up or turning over in bed.

There are other factors that can lead to vertigo attacks, here are some common causes:

  • Chronic headaches and migraines
  • Prolonged bed rest
  • Head injuries
  • Spinal misalignments
  • Low blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension) - a condition in which your blood pressure decreases when you stand up

Symptoms of Vertigo

The symptoms presented may vary from person to person. Your symptoms might be mild, or severe, depending on what's the main root of the problem and it can get worse when left untreated.
Some common signs and symptoms would include:

  • Dizziness
  • Feeling like you're moving or spinning
  • Balance problems
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Pulled to one direction

How do I stop vertigo attacks?

There are a few steps you can take note to reduce your risk. These includes:

  • Get up slowly when getting out of bed, sit on the edge of the bed for a minute or so before standing up. You can take as much time as you need.
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated on two pillows
  • Sit down straight away when you feel dizzy
  • Squatting instead of bending over when picking something up

Treatment Options for Vertigo

Chiropractic has proven incredibly effective in reducing problems in the inner ear, including hearing concerns and ear infections. Vertigo is connected to fluid buildup in the inner ear, and the area in which the buildup occurs is connected via nerves to your upper cervical vertebrae. With manipulations and adjustments, it helps to realign the joints and vertebrae in the cervical spine, in turn correcting the nervous systems pathways and allowing for a clearer communication. Another technique used by chiropractors is the Epley Maneuver, which is a repositioning technique of the inner ear. This is done to facilitate the recalibration of the inner ear and its components. It’s a non-invasive maneuver and truly supports the body’s natural healing abilities. Along with chiropractic treatment, our chiropractor may teach you some exercises to do at home to help ease your symptoms.
